Bloodsports for bigots

Woolas, the environment minister and MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, told the Sunday Times: “If you have a child with your cousin, the likelihood is there’ll be a genetic problem. The issue we need to debate is first-cousin marriages, whereby a lot of arranged marriages are with first cousins and that produces lots of genetic problems in terms of disability.”

Woolas is of course right to raise concerns about the effects of consanguinuity. Coming hot on the heels of Rowan Williams’s admission that the introduction of aspects of sharia law to British law are inevitable, the remarks point towards the possibility that at some point in the near future, Britain will be ruled by theocratic inbreds.

We need some soothing words from the Supreme Governor of the Church of England on this score.
