God Save Us From Religious Nutters

Julie Burchill

I don’t have a spiritual bone in my body; but what I am, is religious. I believe, literally, in the God of the Old Testament, whom I understand as the Lord of the Jews and the Protestants. I’m a Christian Zionist, as well as a Christian feminist and a Christian socialist.

Christian head-the-ball, more like. And the article manages to criticise most atheists for their -drum roll- narcissism.

The Civilising Missionary Position

“Exotic locations gave great scope to authors to be a bit racier. It is usually an English person going into the tropics to experience this different culture,” Dr McAleer says.

“But they never lose their moral foundation. The heroines normally wind up reforming the sheikh.”

Pulp orientalism, I suppose.
