Aerial attacks

On this day 70 years ago, Barcelona was being subjected to 41 hours of continuous aerial bombardment by fascist air forces, comprising 12 massive attacks and the dropping of 44 tonnes of bombs on the civilian population of the city. Barcelona became a petri-dish experiment for a method of terrorizing civilian populations that was to become widespread during the Second World War, and which continues to be used to this day.

As today’s El Público report notes, 670 civilians died in the attacks, one quarter of the death toll from aerial bombardments in the city during the entire civil war. In the whole of Catalonia, nearly 5,000 people were killed by aerial bombardment by the Italian planes.

One of the bombs caused the explosion of a lorry containing TNT. The Franco-led forces said that this justified the bombing of Barcelona, since it demonstrated that the city was involved in the production of armaments, and criticised the Catalan authorities for placing such dangerous materials near civilians.
