Pete’s Sake

This site is about what people used to believe when they were children.

Beyond the usual (Santa Claus brings you presents at Christmas, the tooth fairy gives you money for your teeth, the US Army are always a force for good, the Austin Montego is the best car in the world) , I don’t recall believing in anything strange, but this may be simply because my memory doesn’t go that far back.

I can remember concluding strange things based on information available to me at the time, however.

The woman who looked after me during the day was religious, and would bring me to mass after nursery school. It was here that I developed the idea for a while that God was a person who was normally known by his surname, much like Starsky or Spock, and was only addressed by his full name under the most solemn of circumstances. This happened after each of the readings at mass, when I heard my minder say:

“Thanks, Peter God.”
