Plain As The Nose On Your Face

Germaine Greer:

Anyone who uses the word “somewhat” wouldn’t know plain English if it mugged him in the street.

I have used the word “somewhat” in 16 posts on this blog, although at least one of them is a quote. As a means of appearing snooty and obnoxious, I quite like it, although I would not use it when speaking to anyone.

GG’s article, and the campaign that incited it, raise the question of whether or not plain English is actually a good thing. Plainness is not necessarily a positive attribute. Only a bore or a curmudgeon would go to a gourmet restaurant and eschew the contents of the menu for a poached egg on toast.

There are certainly quite a lot of people who use convoluted language for all sorts of evil ends, but that does not make a virtue of plainness.
