Danube Decomissioning and Lubricating Lobs

I note with sadness that the Northern Irish Magyar blog is no more. Or perhaps he’s just become an evangelical enthusiast for Skype products. I bet, however, that in the wake of last night’s stunning result for Northern Ireland, he’s wishing he hadn’t pulled the plug so soon.

Healy’s last goal in his hat-trick -a lob- was a sublime moment. I had a look at the Spanish sports pages this morning, and they are suitably indignant.

For a non-native speaker, Spanish football slang can be rather arcane: for instance, ‘palomitas’, meaning ‘popcorn’, refers to a perhaps unnecessary flying diving save made by the goalkeeper. This is a nice one though: ‘vaselina‘, i.e. vaseline, appears to mean ‘lob’.

Think up your own risqué headlines for that one.

All the best to Paul in whatever he’s up to now.
