Just The Three Of Us

I’m listening to Triad, a song written by David Crosby, and originally left off The Byrds’ psych-pop classic The Notorious Byrd Brothers. The lyrics of the song are about him trying to persuade a couple of lady friends to partake in a threesome:

You are afraid, embarrased too
No one has ever said such a thing to you
Your mother’s ghost stands at your shoulder
A face like ice, a little bit colder
Saying to you
You can not do that it breaks all the rules
You learned in school
But I don’t really see,
why can’t we go on as three

The dirty hound. Still – what a singer. Contrary to conventional wisdom, he was the most talented Byrd: far more than Gene Clark, Roger McGuinn, and even Gram Parsons. The problem for him was that his drug habit didn’t kill him, and he’s a bit of an ugly get to boot. His album If Only I Could Remember My Name, which you can get for under 10 Euro in most record stores, is great music for thumping hangovers.
