A Window On The World

Yesterday evening’s glow enticed us out for a dander around the houses. As we passed one house, the woman of the house, or at least a woman of the house, opened an upstairs window, and leaned out. At first I thought it was to savour the balm of the setting sun, but then I saw her elbow was cocked, and she held something – a loofah perhaps?- behind her head.

Just as I expected her to break out in song – perhaps a verse of Spanish Harlem, or a few bars of some Rodgers and Hammerstein number- she gently tossed her cargo out onto the most delicate of Irish Sea breezes, and it fell in an arc, landing with a pif! on her verdant front lawn.

Ah, the splendours of the Irish front garden! There is surely no better place on this earth where one might cast a dirty nappy!

Imperial Lather

Geoffrey Wheatcroft writes approvingly of the Euston manifesto:

There is a plausible slogan to be added to their manifesto: “Progressive,
democratic, imperialist, and proud of it.”

That’ll get them plenty of popular support, I’m sure. Especially out there in the colonies, what?
