Baghdad Stampede

Awful events in Baghdad.

Update 1:

Faced with reports of over a thousand dead Shiites in what seems to be a result of the fear of suicide bombers, isn’t it about time people in Europe and America began disabusing themselves of ludicrous convictions about monolithic Islam and its angry Muslims who hate ‘our’ freedoms?

Update 2:

The Guardian leader talks about compassion fatigue on Iraq-related matters. Did armchair pundits like me ever care in the first place? Can you be authentically compassionate with people you don’t know and will never meet, thousands of miles away?

Update 3:

How much of this method of updating posts on events is borne of morbid fascination? When I turned on the computer, I noticed that I had written ‘Update 1’, rather than simply ‘Update’ yesterday, as if I had already decided that there could be other useful updates to follow.
