Torture Tables

I don’t quite understand what ‘to some degree permissible’ is supposed to mean when talking about torture. Even the most enthusiastic of sadists might recoil somewhat at the possibility of torture being absolutely permissible. I mean, imagine getting your fingernails pulled out with a pair of pliers because you had some hydrogen peroxide and an iPod in your handbag and you were suspected of being a bomb maker.

Anyway, the BBC did a report on a survey conducted on global attitudes towards torture. It had a table showing countries in alphabetical order. Here are the countries in order of the percentage who think torture ought to be permitted.

Maybe I’m Amazed (You’re Micturating In A Ming)

Many criticisms are levelled at the popular press, but no-one could ever fault it for choosing to avert its eyes from the plight of the exceedingly rich. So whilst others might bemoan the fact that rather shocking details of Paul McCartney’s divorce have been made public, I welcome the valuable attention this draws to the depths of misery that the rich have to endure. Those of us with less money should never allow ourselves to forget their suffering.

Can anything exemplify this suffering more exquisitely than the denial of an antique bedpan?
The hordes-smugly content with their lot- sneer in incomprehension at what they see as the absurd self-indulgence. An antique bedpan? How dare she!

Yet, were the woman in question to pose in a Hello! magazine photo spread having tea, holding a mug identifiable as the one you got for 5 Tiger Tokens, she would be denounced for getting ideas below her station. Why, the hordes would demand to know, is this woman not slurping from an antique China tea cup? Isn’t this what we pay to see?

This is what the rich have been reduced to: so hounded are they by the demands of the poor, they haven’t got a pot to piss in.

Petrol Bombs of Tolerance

The PSNI have said they do not believe that a petrol bomb attack on a house ‘occupied by foreign nationals’ was racially motivated.

Thank heavens for that. We should all strive to build a society where foreign nationals can be petrol bombed in their homes without fear of racial discrimination.
